Since 1845

Hopsteiner was founded in 1845 and is now one of the world's leading trading companies with its own hop farms and processing plants. Our aim is to continuously develop and optimise the science and technology of growing, refining and selling hops.


We want to stay one step ahead of developments in the industry in the areas of hop cultivation and refinement, as well as in brewing, so that we can always supply the market with the right hops and the desired hop products. Our experience and the tradition of over 175 years of company history form a solid foundation for us to position ourselves even better in the future. This enables us to open up new horizons in our industry and provide outstanding services for our partners.

The beginning

Hopsteiner comes from humble beginnings and was founded in 1845 in Laupheim, Germany. Laupheim was a small but bustling town on the verge of agricultural expansion when Simon and his father founded Hopsteiner.

Expansion to New York

Hopsteiner became internationally known when Sam Steiner (Simon's son) expanded the business in New York.
The New York office quickly became successful and brought other family members from Laupheim into the company. The New York office became the center of the business and is still the headquarters of Hopsteiner today.

1919-1933

Presence in America

From 1919 to 1933, Prohibition was the law in the United States. During this difficult time, Hopsteiner expanded its presence in Central and South America and established relationships that continue to this day.

New technologies

In 1940, hop farms were acquired near Salem, OR and Yakima, WA. New technologies emerged and a breakthrough was discovered in electronic vibration, which was used to remove foreign matter from the hops. At the same time, exports of North American hops to South America South America increased significantly.

Beer boom

At the beginning of the 1960s, European beer production was booming again, which paved the way for hop processing technology and prompted Hopsteiner to build a methalene chloride hop extraction plant in Laupheim. Further investments followed in the USA through a joint investment in the Hops Extract Corporation of America (HECA).

In the 1970s, the beer industry was revolutionized by the introduction of hop pelleting. Hopsteiner opened its own pelletizing plant in Yakima, WA, and was at the forefront of this innovative process. Craft beer was still in its infancy, but brewers were curious and wanted to try a more efficient product.

At the forefront of hop breeding

Hopsteiner has been at the forefront of hop breeding in the USA since the early 1980s. Many years and advances in technology have since helped to ensure higher yields, better flavour and improved agronomic sustainability.

Investments

In the early 90s, Hopsteiner was the only company in the industry to invest company in the industry to invest in both ethanol and Co2 hop extraction technology. In 1994, we increased our stake in both extracts by becoming the sole owner of Hops Hops Extract Corporation of America (HECA) and expanding our processing processing capabilities.

xanthohumol

It didn't take long for our hop scientists to recognise the benefits of xanthohumol. Hopsteiner got to work and patented a process for purifying xanthohumol for brewing in 2002 and later for functional foods and beverages in 2008.

Product innovation and certifications

At the beginning of the 21st century, our product range was greatly expanded. The new innovations include: A Tetra production plant, AlphaExtract, Noble and Noble+ hop oils and nine new aroma/high alpha varieties from our own breeding programme. In addition, several developments and investments were made in infrastructure in order to modernise hop cultivation processes. Hopsteiner was recognised worldwide in the area of food and safety and received five new certifications from external auditors in recognition of quality, performance and safety.

Today, Hopsteiner has become one of the leading, globally recognised hop producers, traders and processors. In 2020, we are proud to celebrate our 175th anniversary and look forward to another 175 years of innovation for the future.
